The result of the local elections has been a real wake-up call for the Conservatives and Labour and brought home to them just what a terrible mess they have made of Brexit.
Voters, as expected, used them to demonstrate their anger and disappointment. Votes for independent and minor party candidates, people staying at home, and a huge number of spoiled ballots demonstrate how unhappy people of all political persuasions are.
Our old parties have treated the electorate with disdain for years but Brexit has made millions of people, not previously very politically minded, sit up and take notice. And they don’t like what they have found.
The two traditional main parties are now desperately trying to come to a compromise: not to deliver the Brexit envisioned by the Referendum voters, but so they can pretend to have delivered Brexit in an attempt to save their own jobs.
Should they succeed in securing an agreement, the result will definitely not be what the electorate voted want. If they believe this will make all their problems go away, they are going to be in for a nasty shock.
